Introduction

The education and training of medical students prepares them for practice, but all too often newly-qualified and young doctors express uncertainty or lack confidence in dealing with some of the day-to-day problems they encounter. Confidence grows with the experience that comes with practice, but every generation of young doctors has sought help to deal with the specialist knowledge or practical skills that may be missing.

Basic Surgery provides a practical approach to learning from the experience of those who have found themselves faced with the same difficulties or challenges in recent times. Much of the knowledge that is the foundation of surgery may be acquired from textbooks but much can not. It is not only the operative skill that has to be learned through practice but many aspects of surgical care found on the wards and in emergency departments.

The strength of this course is that it has been designed by young doctors themselves based on the problems and ‘frequently asked questions’ they themselves have encountered. The interactive approach of this course provides a means of sharing the answers to these questions in an effective and useful way which will benefit both young doctors and above all the patients for whom they care.
